Mother Did Not Say If He Was In A Gang. If He Was, Then This Is What Happens

CHICAGOBREAKINGNEWS -- A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed this afternoon in the South Chicago neighborhood as he was walking back to his home after school, his mother said.

Luis Garcia of the 8300 block of South Houston Avenue was shot in the chest about 3:15 p.m. in the 2900 block of East 87th Street, officials said.

Maria Lopez, the boy's mother, said police went to her home and informed her of her son's death and said they were investigating. He was the oldest of her four children, she said.

Lopez said her son was walking home from school as he did most days. She said her second-oldest child, a daughter, was taking her brother's death especially hard.

She declined to say whether her son was in a gang, and said that even though they had problems she loved him.
